The BRIMSTONE is a powerful, desktop-sized tender x-ray emission spectrometer. X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is essentially the same as x-ray fluorescence (XRF), but with very high resolution (<1 eV). With this increased resolution comes access to a wealth of additional information about the systems being measured. Prime examples are the oxidation state sensitivity of the Kα XES line of P, S, and Cl. Using linear combination fitting, ratios of different oxidation states present in the samples can be determined. In addition to Kα XES, the valence-to-core x-ray emission (VTC-XES) can also be measured on the Kβ lines of P and S, allowing direct probing of the valence electronic structure, with strong sensitivity to e.g. the presence of oxygen ligands. The instrument is optimized for the tender x-ray range (~2-5 keV). In addition to P and S, this energy range includes the L emission lines of 5th row transition metals as well as the M emission lines of actinides.
